Leaders must have a sense of God’s purpose for them and their followers (vs. 1)

Leaders must be humble, so humble they will put up with bothersome followers (vv. 6-9)

Knowledge is basic to leadership (vs. 1)

Leaders must set aside their egos to carry out their vision with their followers (vv. 4-5)

Leadership in a small group setting shows the true nature of the leader

It takes time for a leader to get to know the deeper issues on his team

Leaders must have motives of genuine concern for the followers (vv. 8-10)

All leaders have to offer their followers is their words and their works, i.e., consistent character

Leaders must act on the basis of God’s purposes, no matter what it costs them (vv. 4-12)

Leaders must make their lessons absolutely clear (vs. 12-17)

Effective leaders must be aware of those who resist them even when it is well meaning

Leaders must be willing to offer explanations to their followers, no matter what (vv. 6-11)

Leaders must have genuine concern for their vision (vs. 10)

Leaders must be willing to do what those who follow them do not want done (vv. 10-12)

Leaders must face resistance firmly and patiently (vv. 10-12)

Followers can be counted on to try to control the agenda, and leaders cannot allow this to happen (vv. 6,9)

Leaders must exercise authority which grows out of their character and model (vs. 10)

Leaders must be able to serve without abdicating their authority (vs. 12)

Leaders must earn respect by serving (vv. 12-17)
