Setting The Stage
Nothing is impossible with God. In this story found in I Samuel 17, we see that David was able to kill a lion and a giant because God helped him. The story will be acted out by the members of the family, but first you will take some time to make five different masks.
Project
The masks can be drawn on the paper plates or you can cut the pieces of construction paper the size of the paper plate and use that. Once the face is drawn, holes need to be punched on either side near the middle so the string can fit around the head just above the ear. Make sure not to punch the holes too close to the edge or the plate will rip. You will need to take some time to adjust the string to the child’s head before you knot it in the second hole. These are the five masks to be made.
There are three scenes to be acted. Whoever is playing a particular role needs to wear the appropriate mask for those lines. Some roles can be doubled (played by one person). For example, one person can play the lion and the Israelite and another person can play the sheep and Goliath.
Note: An adult will need to tell the children their lines and allow the children time to repeat the lines while acting.

(singing to God) “Jesus loves me this I know ...” |

Lion: |
Roar - I am going to eat a sheep. |

Sheep: |
Help! Help! |

David: |
Help me, God! (takes out his pretend sling shot and swings it over his head. He lets go and everyone watches the pretend rock fly through the air and hit the lion.) |

Lion: |
Ouch! (dies lying on the ground) |
|
David: |
Thank you, God, for helping me save the sheep from the lion. |

Scene 2: David fighting Goliath the giant, an enemy of the Israelites (David, Goliath, Israelite) |

Goliath: |
(yells) Who will come and fight me? |
|
David: |
Why won’t anybody fight Goliath? God would help that person, I know! |
|
Israelite: |
He is so big and we are so little and everyone is afraid. |
|
David: |
Well, I am not afraid and I know God will help me. |
|
Goliath: |
(yells) Who will come and fight me? |
|
David: |
I will! |
|
Goliath: |
What? You’re only a boy! |
|
David: |
Yes, but God will help me (David takes out his pretend sling shot and swings it over his head. He lets go and everyone watches the pretend rock fly through the air and hit Goliath on the head) |

Goliath: |
Good shot - I guess God did help you! (grabs his head and falls down dead) |
|
Israelite: |
Yea David, Yea God!! |

Scene 3: David Made King (David, Israelite) |

David: |
(kneels down on his knees) Yes, I will be king with God’s help. |
|
Israelite: |
(taps David’s head) You are crowned king. |
|
David: |
I am glad that God has helped me because nothing is impossible for God. |
